Reading vs. Examining
Examining a business plan is not the same as reading a business plan. Reading is passive. Examining is active interrogation of every claim, every assumption, and every omission. The examiner's role is to find the gap between what the plan claims and what the evidence supports — and to assess whether that gap is fatal or fixable. This requires a specific mental discipline: engage with the plan as written, but evaluate it against the world as it actually is.
Calibrated Skepticism
The most important skill an examiner develops is calibrated skepticism — the ability to apply appropriate doubt to each claim without becoming cynical. Cynicism dismisses everything. Calibrated skepticism evaluates each claim against the evidence provided and asks: is this believable given what I know about this market, this team, and this stage? Founders are optimists by construction. The examiner's job is to apply the realism the founder cannot apply to their own work.
